The Lion Heart Medical Centre is a second-line health facility located in Yele, the rural heart of beautiful Sierra Leone. This position is an unique opportunity to practise the full scope of global health in a resource-limited setting. The hospital has a capacity of 80 beds divided over male, female, paediatric, isolation and maternity wards. Key activities include a large antenatal clinic, outreaches to surrounding health posts, focus on children under-5 health and malnutrition, and a referral program for complicated obstetric cases. With around 95 staff members including 2 expatriates, over 10.000 patients are treated annually. As a medical officer you mainly collaborate with our multidisciplinary team to provide health care within the possibilities of our setting. The focus is on supervision and teaching. Additionally, you participate in various hospital committees such as infection prevention control and outbreak management, maternal death review or quality management. The organization focuses highly on sustainability, task shifting and capacity building. Therefore, within this position you will train and coach staff and help the hospital to become fully sustainable and self-reliant.
Responsibilities
- Daily patient care in the various wards
- Supervision of patient consultations in the outpatient department
- Assessment and treatment of obstetric and surgical emergency cases
- Ultrasound scanning for outpatients, pregnant women and emergencies
- Performing elective and emergency surgeries
- Rotate in the second on-call schedule with the medical and surgical officer
- Participation in committees or additional projects
- Supervision of midwifes, community health officers, nurses, global health doctor in training and other students
- Organising teachings and simulation trainings for colleagues
- Quality improvement by guideline and protocol writing/ revision
- Involved in organisation of outreach
Requirements
- Licensed medical doctor with additional training in global health and tropical medicine (AIGT), or a similar training program.
- Surgical skills in obstetrics and general surgery. For example: independent performance of a caesarean section, hernia repair, laparotomy etc.
- Knowledge/experience in patient care in paediatrics, infectious diseases and noncommunicable diseases
- Highly (intrinsically) motivated, optimistic, resilient and stress resistant qualities
- Flexible, patient, adaptive, and culturally sensitive mindset
- Able to cope in isolated setting. Previous living experience in a resource deprived area is preferred
